April
28, 2009 - Larry Jon Davis - Since
his childhood in Clinton, Iowa, where he was born in 1944, the arts
have always remained the chief interest for Larry Jon Davis. After
a BA in Fine Art at the University of Iowa and four years with the
USAF in England, Davis returned to the Midwest and began his professional
arts career. Since his 1986 appointment at Florida Community College
at Jacksonville he has continued artistic production and exhibition
exposure as well as finishing Masters level study. He currently teaches
FigureDrawing and Painting at FCCJ’s South Campus. In 1996 he was
first included in the “Art in America” index of artists. In Jacksonville
his works may be viewed at Stellers Gallery in Ponte Vedra. He is
also represented in Charleston, SC by Allison Sprock Fine Art.

Davis’ aesthetic approach blends both realistic and abstract expression influenced by four decades of figure drawing. Likewise, his enduring emphasis on landscape subjects results from years of travel within in the US, Canada, Japan and Western Europe. Larry Davis discusses his upcoming visit to JWS: “My presentation to the April, 2009 meeting of the Jacksonville Watercolor Society involves a mixed media process that makes use of the same subtractive, aquarelle techniques that are found in most traditional watercolor styles. I hope to broaden the spectrum slightly by utilizing both the bamboo pen and brush as well as watercolor pencils to create a range of works that rely heavily on the gestural approach to image making. By that I mean that the emphasis will be on starting in a very loose and generalized way to capture the subject and then gradually arriving at a more specific finished work. Because, like most good juicy watercolor, there is room for a lot of happy accidents and discoveries based on wet into wet technique, I intend to show how free and expressive one can work and still produce an accurate and provoking final product.” |

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Members, Did you make it to our Spring Show reception? What a great crowd! David Daniels, our judge, had a very hard time with the quality of work that our members brought in. The show was displayed nicely at Sweet Magnolia’s and the refreshments were delicious. A special thanks to Carolyn Kelso, Dee Roberts, Lisa Cederberg, Verna Urbanski and Debbie Gollhofer. The Florida Times had a great article about us in the Arlington Sun section on Saturday, April 4th. We took up the whole front page and an additional page inside. Thank you Joyce Gabiou for making that happen. I am looking forward to our next demonstration with Larry Davis. Our Nominating Committee has been working hard to find willing persons to represent our board. I am also working on an outreach program at the University Branch Library to begin in September. Please contact me if you can help. May you all have a blessed Easter and look forward to seeing you April 28th. Sincerely, Terese Muller |

SPRING SHOW MARCH 29- APRIL 24 Congratulations to all of the Jacksonville Watercolor Society members who took the time and the energy to enter the 2009 Spring Show at SWEET MAGNOLIA’S GALLERY at 8250 Arlington Expressway in Jacksonville. If you missed the opening, you missed a very exciting art experience. We had the finest of artists , David Daniels, as our judge and the most congenial and cooperative hostess, Debbie Gollhofer, owner of Sweet Magnolia’s Gallery. She hung the Show with Dee Roberts who was Co-chair of the event. The show will run through April 24th and, if I do say so myself, it’s worth taking another trip to the gallery - to see it again! Sweet Magnolia’s is open Monday – Friday 10AM to 6 PM, Saturday 10AM to 4PM and closed Sundays. Congratulations to all who were juried into the show and to the Award Winners on their beautiful entries.
Thank you to Verna Urbanski who did a wonderful job with the refreshments, Charles Stratmann who brought the wine, Debbie who provided us with a delightfully congenial bartender which added another touch of elegance. Thanks to Fran Grandy who made all our lists, all our volunteers who did the take-ins, the dropoff- destination people, and to those who, so willingly, filled in the glitches when things went off track, so that no entrant was disappointed. Thanks to Archway Gallery, Great Hangups, Charles Stratmann, and Amelia SanJon Gallery for being our drop-off depots; to Bruce Hinton who delivered the drop-offs after he closed the gallery; the eight Past Presidents who sponsored the Past President’s Awards; and, last but not least, our co-chairs, Dee Roberts and Lisa Cederberg — Thank you, Ladies, for a memorable, beautiful show! |
