Charles Stratmann began painting in watercolors in 1991 after returning to an interrupted art career that began in 1954. His first art instruction was under Joe Cain in Corpus Christi, Texas. Cain's strong cubist style influenced Charles. For several years, Charles painted mostly in casein with some oils emerging and from time-to-time an occasional watercolor found its way to the framer. All of this early work were cubist. Charles was a career Naval officer, retiring after 31 years of service. After retiring a second time, this time from teaching, Charles resolved to paint in watercolor full time. Charles Stratmann is active in the Jacksonville Watercolor Society, as well as in the St. Augustine Art Association where he edits the newsletter. Awards won Artist of the Year in 2002.
